The "Unix for Advanced Users" (UAU) class is a comprehensive, two-day course administered by the UITS Unix System Supports Group. It was developed mostly in-house, with the exception of section 3.4 "Shell Scripting" which is used with permission of its author, Claude Cantin of the Research Computing Support Group of the National Research Council of Canada.

Intended For: Indiana University (IU) IT providers, IU students, staff, faculty, or external participants, with a basic working knowledge of Unix who are looking to go behind-the-scenes to become more effective Unix users or who are preparing to get into our Unix System Administration course.

Covers: a good cross-section of intermediate to advanced Unix commands, concepts, and procedures. Class notes are available online.

Prerequisites: You must be physically present at the Indiana University's Bloomington campus to take the class.

The class presumes that you are a regular Unix user who is comfortable with basic Unix commands and usage. It is not recommended for novice users or for individuals with no previous exposure to Unix.

Format: This is a two-day class and runs from 8am to 3pm each day.

Where: Room 109, Wrubel Computing Center, 2711 E. 10th Street, Bloomington (at the intersection of 10th and Bypass). Directions are available.

Admission Criteria: Registration for the Unix for Advanced Users class is on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no entrance test. Seats are very limited so register early. To register, please fill out this online questionnaire. Class participants will be selected in the following order:

    First preference: IU departmental local support providers (LSPs)
    Second preference: IU non-LSPs involved in Unix support.
    Third preference: IU students, staff, and faculty not involved in Unix support.
    Fourth preference: non-IU personnel.

Class Fee: Free for IU LSPs, $100 for IU non-LSPs, $300 for non-IU personnel.

    First offering - January 18, 19
    Second offering - May 9, 10
    Third offering - August 8, 9
    Fourth offering - December 5, 6

Special offerings: Groups both inside and outside of IU can request a special session of Unix For Advanced Users for a minumu of 10 students. The fee for the course is $300 per student. Contact uwsg@iu.edu for details.
